Paralives Controls and Classic Camera Guide
Patch 0.1.8 added a second camera scheme for players who prefer familiar life-sim controls. This guide helps you choose a mode before a long build, records the shortcuts worth memorizing, and gives a symptom-first reset when the camera feels stuck.
Set up Classic Camera without disrupting a build
Open Options, stay on the General page, and find Camera Mode. Paralives is the original scheme; Classic is the option added in patch 0.1.8. Classic rotates with the middle mouse button and pans with the right button. Change the mode while standing on a simple lot, not halfway through a roof or terrain edit, so your first five minutes are spent learning instead of undoing accidental changes.
Choose the original Paralives camera if…
you already built muscle memory in Early Access, use edge scrolling comfortably, or share one setup with another player who knows the default bindings. Keeping the original scheme also reduces confusion when following older launch-week videos.
Choose Classic camera if…
you come from The Sims or another mouse-driven builder, expect middle-click rotation, or constantly trigger the wrong movement with the default setup. Classic changes the camera scheme; it does not redesign the remaining Live or Build Mode commands.
After choosing a mode, tune one sensitivity at a time. Start with movement, then zoom, then rotation. Test each value by circling one small room, moving from street level to the roof, and returning to the same chair. If you change all sliders together, you cannot tell which adjustment caused overshooting.
Shortcut table: learn the actions, then verify your bindings
The safest reference is always the current in-game Controls menu because most keys can be rebound and keyboards differ. Use this table as a memory plan rather than an excuse to force a shortcut that your build no longer shows.
| Action | Windows | macOS | When it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick save | F5 | F5 / Fn+F5 | Before terrain, cheats, or mod tests |
| Undo / Redo | Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y | Cmd+Z / Cmd+Shift+Z | One object or wall action at a time |
| Floor up / down | Page Up / Page Down | Page Up / Page Down | Inspect roofs and split levels |
| Cycle wall visibility | Home / End | Home / End | Check routing and hidden objects |
| Photo Mode / hide UI | P / Ctrl+H | P / Cmd+H | Clean screenshots after saving |
| Console / help | Ctrl+F1, then HELP | Cmd+Fn+F1, then HELP | Verify commands on your exact build |
Laptop function rows, regional keyboards, accessibility software, Steam Input, and custom bindings can change what a physical key does. If a shortcut fails, do not repeat it ten times. Open Controls, search the action name, and record the binding shown on your machine.
Trackpad and no-middle-button setup
A trackpad can play Paralives, but a control scheme designed around middle and right clicks needs preparation. First enable your operating system’s secondary click gesture. Then test two-finger movement and pinch zoom outside Build Mode. If Classic rotation is unreliable, keep the original camera, enable edge scrolling, and use keyboard floor and wall controls instead of imitating a mouse gesture that your hardware does not expose consistently.
- Create a temporary empty lot or duplicate a library lot; never learn gestures on the only copy of a detailed build.
- Lower rotation sensitivity before lowering movement sensitivity. Sudden orbiting causes more lost context than a slow pan.
- Keep edge scrolling off if the pointer frequently touches the screen edge while selecting catalog items; otherwise leave it on as a reliable pan fallback.
- When a gesture behaves differently after an OS update, verify the operating-system gesture first and the game binding second.
Camera troubleshooting: reset the smallest layer first
Most camera trouble is a setting, focus, or input-layer problem rather than a damaged save. Use the order below. Stop as soon as the problem disappears; changing every layer at once makes the cause impossible to identify.
1. Confirm focus and mode
Press Escape, close any open text field or catalog search, and verify whether you are in Live, Build, or Photo Mode. A key captured by search can look like a broken camera.
2. Toggle only Camera Mode
Switch from Classic to Paralives, apply, move once, then switch back. Do not reset every setting yet. This isolates the new 0.1.8 mode from unrelated sensitivity values.
3. Test a clean input path
Disconnect a controller, close remapping utilities, and test one mouse or trackpad. If the problem disappears, rebuild custom input layers one at a time.
4. Separate camera stutter from camera controls
Patch 0.1.8 optimised animation loading, newspapers, and building fade-out, but performance can still vary by lot. Test an empty lot. Smooth input there points to performance or lot complexity, not the binding itself.
A three-minute control drill before real play
Use one small furnished room and one outdoor object. Rotate around the room, pan from the front door to the street, zoom from a chair to the full lot, move up and down one floor, cycle wall visibility, undo one harmless object move, and take a Photo Mode screenshot. Finish with a quick save. This single loop touches the inputs most likely to interrupt ordinary play.
Repeat the drill once after changing Camera Mode, sensitivity, a mouse, a trackpad gesture, or a remapping utility. Do not judge a scheme by the first accidental orbit. Judge whether you can return to the same object without thinking. If the second run is still uncomfortable, revert the last change instead of stacking another adjustment on top. Record the values that worked so an operating-system or game update does not force you to rediscover them.
Source and correction note
Patch facts are based on the official Paralives 0.1.8 notes published August 24, 2026. Shortcut behavior is presented as a player workflow and must be checked against the Controls menu on your build. If a binding differs, send the page URL, platform, keyboard type, and the action shown in-game through the Contact page.
